MEA Overview

Matanuska Electric Association, Inc. (MEA) is a member-owned cooperative that serves the Matanuska/Susitna and Eagle River/Chugiak areas. MEA serves over 58,000 customers through more than 4,000 miles of power lines. It was formed in 1941 and is Alaska’s oldest and second-largest electric co-op.

Quick Facts

  • MEA’s General Manager, Joe Griffith, joined the company in 2009
  • MEA is a founding member of the Alaska Railbelt Cooperative Transmission & Electric Company (ARCTEC), a consortium of utilities dedicated to finding solutions to energy needs and challenges for the railbelt grid
  • MEA owns and operates the Eklutna Generation Station
  • MEA provides updates on power outages via its Facebook page:
  • MEA’s newsletter is called Powerlines
  • MEA is active in the communities it serves, including facilitating local fundraising events and donating to local organizations
