PALMER, Alaska —MEA is looking to the Alaska energy market and both Alaska and Lower 48 developers for new power supply opportunities within the state as the cooperative plans for the future energy needs of its members and communities.

MEA has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) inviting Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to propose additional energy and capacity resources that could be supplied to MEA through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Proposals may also include services that help MEA maintain a reliable and stable electric system.

“Our Board has directed us to leave no stone unturned and keep all options on the table as Alaska’s energy landscape continues to change,” said MEA CEO Tony Izzo. “We want to understand what opportunities are available and what could make sense for MEA and our members. This process gives independent power producers an opportunity to bring forward ideas and allows us to evaluate potential resources based on reliability, cost and the value they could provide to our members.”

The RFP is part of MEA’s ongoing work to plan for future power supply needs and explore opportunities to diversify its energy portfolio. Through the competitive process, MEA can evaluate potential projects and resources available in the market while considering how they could fit within the cooperative’s existing electric system and long-term plans.

MEA seeks existing generation or new generation projects, including thermal and renewable resources, applicable storage and regulation resources and other economically competitive technologies. Proposals may include projects outside MEA’s service territory or resources with characteristics that could support or be shared by multiple utilities, reinforcing MEA’s collaborative approach to meeting Alaska’s future energy needs.

Independent power producers interested in participating can request the complete RFP and supporting documents by emailing FormalQuestions@mea.coop. A confidentiality agreement must be completed before access to the documents will be provided through MEA’s ShareFile site.

MEA will hold a virtual pre-proposal conference at 10 a.m. Alaska Standard Time on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Participationis encouraged but not required. Those interested in attending should email FormalQuestions@mea.coop at least 24hours before the meeting to receive the Zoom invitation.

Questions regarding the RFP are due by noon on Tuesday,October 6, with MEA responses expected to be posted by 5 p.m. on Tuesday,October 13.

Interested parties must submit a Notice of Intent to Propose by Monday, October 19. Final proposals are due through MEA’s ShareFile site by 4 p.m. Alaska Standard Time on Friday, October 23, 2026.
