EV Electric Service Cost Considerations and Infrastructure Upgrades
When considering participation in MEA's Off-Peak EV Charging Program, it's important to be aware of potential infrastructure requirements that may arise. Specifically, depending on your existing electrical setup and the type of EV charger you plan to install, a transformer upgrade might be necessary. Such upgrades can be significant undertakings, potentially costing several thousand dollars. Before committing to the installation of an EV charger, it's advisable to assess your current electrical load to determine if a transformer upgrade is necessary.

Understanding Transformer Upgrades
A transformer is a critical component in your home's electrical system, responsible for adjusting the voltage of electricity supplied to your residence. If your current transformer isn't equipped to handle the additional load from an EV charger, an upgrade may be required. This process involves replacing the existing transformer to accommodate the increased electrical demand, ensuring safe and efficient operation of your EV charging equipment.

Cost Considerations
The cost of a transformer upgrade can vary based on several factors, including the specifications of the new transformer, labor, and any additional infrastructure modifications needed. On average, such upgrades can range from several thousand dollars upward. It's also worth noting that while MEA may cover certain aspects of service modifications, the expense for transformer upgrades is the responsibility of the member. For personalized assistance and to determine the specific requirements for your situation, it's recommended to contact MEA directly. Our team can provide insights into your current transformer capacity and guide you through the necessary steps if an upgrade is needed (email: electricvehicles@mea.coop).

Key Time of Use Program Features

1

Off-Peak Charging Discounts

Charge your EV during the off-peak hours between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM and enjoy discounted rates on your electricity usage. Charging during this period helps MEA manage demand efficiently while providing you with costs savings.

2

EV TOU Program Options

Option 1

Get a monthly allowance of  500 kWh for off-peak EV charging at 50% off the regular rate. MEA will replace the EV owner’s existing meter (at no cost to the participant) with a meter that tracks time-of-use consumption.

*Please note that in some instances, a transformer upgrade (at the EV owner's expense) may be necessary depending on the type of charger being used.

Option 2

For those who require more power, you can install a second meter base at your own cost for unlimited kWh off-peak charging, also at 50% off MEA’s first step single-phase rate. To be eligible for this option, the customer must install a second meter base in a sub-metered configuration that is exclusively connected to the customer's EV charger. Such installation must be performed by a qualified, licensed electrician, at the customer's own expense. MEA will install a second meter at no charge. Please be aware that the necessary service modifications for Option 2 may cost the EV owner several thousand dollars. Option 2 is more ideal for high-mileage users or multiple EV households.

3

Specialty Meter Installation

Under both program options, MEA will install a time-of-use meter at no charge, ensuring accurate tracking of your off-peak usage.
Additional service modifications (such as a transformer upgrade) may be required, and is also at the participant's expense. An estimate chart of service modifications examples for EV owners is provided below. For Option 2, participants are responsible for the cost of installing a second meter base.
