MEA has updated its annual Unclaimed Capital Credits list, with more than $451,000 currently waiting to be claimed by current and former MEA members.
The list includes unclaimed capital credits dating back to 1997, with the average unclaimed amount totaling approximately $57. While many amounts are relatively small, the largest unclaimed value associated with a member is approximately $15,000.
MEA encourages members to check the updated list—not only for their own name, but also for family members who may have previously received electric service from the cooperative.
As a member-owned electric cooperative, MEA operates differently than an investor-owned utility. Each year, revenues collected beyond the cost of providing electric service are allocated to members as capital credits based on their electricity usage.
Capital credits remain with the cooperative for a period of time to help fund operations and infrastructure. When MEA's financial condition allows, the Board of Directors may approve the retirement of capital credits, returning those funds to members.
Sometimes those payments go unclaimed, often because a former member has moved and MEA no longer has a current mailing address.
If you or a family member appears on MEA's Unclaimed Capital Credits list, contact MEA Member Services at 907-761-9300.
Our Member Services team will help verify the account information, update the mailing address if needed, and assist with having the capital credit check reissued.
