Join MEA’s Public Charging Pilot Program and Help Power the Future of Transportation

Matanuska Electric Association is excited to announce the next phase of its Level 2 EV Charging Pilot Program, designed to expand access to public electric vehicle (EV) charging across our service area. We’re seeking local businesses, organizations, housing authorities, and government entities to host a commercial-grade Level 2 EV charger—free of charge.

What’s Included

Selected participants will receive a ChargePoint CT4021-GW1 dual-port Level 2 EV charger at no cost. While MEA will provide the charger, participants will be responsible for installation and any related infrastructure expenses such as mounting, electrical upgrades, and/or transformer upgrades.

Why Participate?

This pilot is a unique opportunity to:

  • Enhance your public services or amenities
  • Attract new visitors and customers
  • Support Alaska’s growing EV community
  • Contribute to MEA’s research and planning for future EV infrastructure and energy needs

MEA will collect and analyze anonymized data over a three-year period to better understand EV usage trends and help shape long-term strategies for beneficial electrification. Charger hosts may choose to offer free charging or recoup electricity and maintenance costs by charging users. However, this program is not intended to generate profit from the charger itself.

Ideal Locations

We're especially looking for high-visibility, publicly accessible locations such as:

  • Local businesses
  • Shopping centers and grocery stores
  • Housing complexes and community buildings
  • Parks, trailheads, and recreational areas
  • Government offices and public facilities

Participation Requirements

To qualify, applicants must:

  1. Be a business, local government agency, or housing authority
  2. Be an active MEA member
  3. Install the charger at a publicly accessible location
  4. Maintain open public access and snow removal
  5. Commit to a three-year participation period
  6. Have reliable LTE cellular coverage at the proposed charger site
  7. Cover all installation, operations, and maintenance costs
  8. Submit a completed application package, including:
    • Proof of site ownership or lease
    • Site plan showing public access
    • Service Modification Questionnaire
    • Payment model for user charging (cost recovery only)
    • Snow removal and charger maintenance plan

Each proposed location requires its own application. If service upgrades are necessary, the applicant must complete MEA’s Service Modification process prior to receiving a charger.
