MEA is aware of recent public discussions regarding the proposed Terra Energy Center project and related interest in potential large-scale energy users, including a data center, in the Mat-Su Borough. These conversations have gained attention following recent Borough actions exploring a public-private partnership to support economic development opportunities tied to the project.
As questions arise, MEA wants members to understand our role, what we know today, and how any potential project would be evaluated through our commitment to safe, reliable, and affordable power.
As part of our ongoing responsibility to plan for the future energy needs of our members, MEA regularly engages with developers, utilities, and industry partners to better understand emerging technologies and potential power supply opportunities. Terra Energy initiated one such conversation with MEA’s Board of Directors in February 2025, sharing early concepts for their proposed project. At this stage, the Terra Energy Center project remains in an early, conceptual phase. MEA has not entered into a power purchase agreement or made any commitment to procure energy from the project. MEA did provide letters of support during early feasibility discussions to allow further study and evaluation.
Our focus remains consistent: ensuring safe, reliable, and affordable power for our members. This means carefully evaluating a range of potential energy options as the landscape evolves. Any future power supply decisions would go through a thorough review process, including regulatory oversight and approval by MEA’s member-elected Board of Directors.
MEA will continue to explore opportunities that support long-term reliability and cost stability for our members and the broader Railbelt system.
